Identification Information for Non-US Citizens
If you are not a US Citizen there are several documents that may be acceptable as identification.
This will help you identify which is the best identification information to put in the student loan application.
The Alien ID Number from the Permanent Resident Card is required for Permanent Residents if they do not have a Social Security Number.
The number is located near the top of the card, as well as in the data string along the bottom.
Depending on the school attended, a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident should enter the Social Insurance Number under Alternative ID Number.
For most US schools, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident will require the F1 Visa and I-20 Form required of International Students.
International Students in US Schools
At most US schools, an International Student is required to have an F-1 Student Visa, a School Certified Form I-20, or a Form I-94.
The student can use the ID number from the F-1 or the Form I-94 under the Alternative ID section.
The F-1 visa is issued to non-immigrant, full-time, international students pursuing education in the United States.
F-1 visas are arranged through academic institutions. The visa will be fixed in the student’s passport.
Form I-94 must be completed at the time of entry to the United States by certain foreign citizens being admitted into the United States in a non-immigrant visa status.
The form is completed at entry to the US and is retained by the visitor until final departure from the United States.
International Students Not in the US
International Students who are not studying in the US are not required to have United States Immigration Forms if their school allows it.
In those cases, the student should enter the number from their Passport issued by their country of citizenship.
These students may also be required to send a copy of their Visa for the country the school is located in if it is not
the country of the student's citizenship.
